Why the first 3 seconds matter
Shorts play automatically in an endless feed, which means every video starts mid-decision: the viewer is already choosing whether to flick past. Nothing later in the video can recover an opening that gave them no reason to wait.
A hook works by opening a loop the viewer wants closed — a number that implies a list, a claim that begs a challenge, a question they can't answer yet. The words are only half of it: the same line on screen as text catches viewers watching on mute, which is most of them.

Writing hooks that don't sound generic
- Name the specific thing. "3 stretches for desk workers" beats "3 stretches you need" — specificity is what makes a promise believable.
- Put the payoff in the hook, not after it. Don't save the interesting part for second five.
- Keep the overlay under eight words. Longer than that and it becomes something to read rather than something to notice.
